Our History

The History of Our Church

Grace Baptist Church was started from scratch on May 15th, 2004 in the American Legion Hall on the corner of 8th and 'C' Streets in Springfield. The church was originally named Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with a name change in 2017.

Nick Gillaspie grew up the area having been born in Roseburg and graduating from Springfield High School in 1992. After high school he married his high-school sweetheart, Lisa, and they have been married for over 30 years. He joined the Air Force and was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey as an aircraft mechanic and Lockheed C-141 Starlifters.

After his enlistment in the Air Force, Nick Gillaspie went to Bible college where he graduated with honors and served in the Military Ministry for six years.

It was at Bible college where Nick and Matt Burkhead met and began to serve together. Matt and his wife, Miranda, moved to Springfield to help in starting the church.

Early on in our church, Nick knocked on the door of Chris and Bekah Rhoades. Through their many years of service here, Chris is now the leader of our youth department.

In summer of 2024, we closed on our new building at 129 42nd Street in Springfield. We are in the middle of permits, planning, and building; and will be meeting there summer 2025.

We are temporarily meeting at the Tall Firs Cafe and Events Center at 1488 18th Street until our building is ready.

We have seen families restored and growing; children grow into fine Christ-honoring adults; and a group of people become a church family, grow in the Lord, and love each other.

We think you should visit this Sunday...maybe you could find your place and become part of a great church family!
